Other Languages - Translation

Foreign Language Typesetting / Desktop Publishing

Now that you have your publication finalised in English, how to go about turning it into Chinese (or any other language) and publishing? Chin Communications can help. Much of our work involves not only translation, but typesetting and preparing print-ready artwork using a range of publishing software.  Brochures, books, advertisements, labels, etc can be produced. Whether your designer works on Mac or PC platforms, and uses Quark, Pagemaker, InDesign, Illustrator, etc we can take the files and prepare the publication in the other language. We can provide electronic files ready to print, or film – let us know your requirements.

A few pointers to bear in mind:

  • Many languages take up more space than English (on average 30% more), so if you wish to maintain the same design and number of pages, leave plenty of white space on the page. If not, font sizes and spacing will have to be adjusted and extra pages added.
  • Ensure that the design is finalised as well as the text, because in many cases once the document is typeset changes are not possible to be made by you.
  • PC versus Mac: most translators use PCs, whereas most designers use Mac - check compatibility and select fonts that are common.
  • Provide complete artwork to the typesetter: all source files, graphics, fonts, etc.
  • Provide enough time for the work to be typeset, for the translator to proof it and for the client to approve.
