If you are preparing a case and Chinese parties or documents are involved how to go about protecting your interests and getting the legal documents in Chinese correct.  What about in court – you want to be sure of a Translation in Chinese that you can rely on. A poor Chinese interpreter will mean a bonus to the other side.  Who will be able to tell if the translation is any good?  It might be too late when the case is lost.

The evidence was all heard and the judge declared an adjournment. The defendant said “What about my witness?” The judge replied “You said that you didn’t have any witnesses” – the interpreter had made a big mistake and added in the word ‘today’ – " Did you have any witnesses today?" It was too late. The case was lost.

Legal translation is a very exacting area of work and most translators won’t cope with the complex nature of a legal document – the terminology and style of language used and the need to be absolutely precise. For example, mining and resource contracts not only require detailed financial documentation, but specialised resources terminology too that takes a great deal of expertise and experience. So the deal might be signed and sealed – but what about the translation – can you trust it? Are the Chinese translators legal translators – how would you know if the translation in Chinese is binding and protecting your interests?

If you are preparing for a court case – a complex commercial matter or a maritime case, for example – two highly specialised areas – you must have the best interpreter on your side (don’t let the other side get in first!) Believe me it happens and once we’re engaged for one side, we can’t work for the other party!
