MARKING 20 YEARS IN THE TRANSLATION BUSINESS
Celebrating 20 years in business in 2012, Chin Communications, Australia’s premier specialist Chinese translating and interpreting service, determined to do something different to mark its two decades of pioneering work. Recognising the importance of training capable translators and interpreters, Chin decided to reward excellence in this industry with a student scholarship.
Budding Mandarin Interpreters and Translators studying in the Master Program at Monash University will be eligible for the scholarship awarded each semester to outstanding students. Monash also has a conference interpreting Master’s course and trains practitioners in this most demanding of all interpreting – simultaneous conference interpreting.
Chin Communications’s Managing Director, Charles Qin, is Australia’s leading Mandarin Interpreter – the first to be accepted into AIIC in the region. He has guest lectured at Monash over the years presenting practical work ideas and advice to students studying translating and interpreting in all languages. Chin also develops translators and interpreters through its work placement program. Students have benefitted from work at Chin’s office in Melbourne’s CBD. The training has included hands-on translating, design, observing interpreting work including visiting delegations and conferences and immersing themselves in Melbourne’s culture.
Charles Qin said: “Translating and interpreting has given me many benefits and wonderful experiences from interpreting for Presidents and Prime Ministers to mentoring enthusiastic students. Recognising the level of skill to work at this level, I believe that the training offered at Monash should be valued and excellence recognised.”
