NAATI Consecutive Interpreting

Consecutive interpreting is for smaller, more intimate settings such as business meetings or legal proceedings.

What you need to know about consecutive interpreting

Consecutive interpreting is the most common type of interpreting, ideal for settings such as:

  • One-on-one or small meetings
  • Group meetings
  • Formal presentations
  • Legal proceedings
  • Business negotiations
  • Medical or other professional consultations

⚠ Important: Since consecutive interpreting requires the speaker and interpreter to alternate (speaker speaks, pauses and interpreter interprets), meetings typically take twice as long. Be sure to plan for extra “interpreting” time when scheduling these activities.

In-Person Interpreting
  • Arrival: The interpreter arrives 15 minutes early for introductions
  • Minimum booking: 2 hours

Remote Interpreting
  • Perfect for: Meetings outside standard business hours, with overseas participants, or in regional areas (e.g., Geelong, Ballarat, Shepparton)
  • Minimum booking: 1 hour
  • Platforms: Available on WebEx, Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams

Best practice for working with interpreters

To ensure a smooth and efficient interpreting experience for you and your guests or clients, follow these best practices:

  • Provide relevant materials: Share any documents or materials that will be discussed, such as presentations, affidavits, contracts, or financial reports, specialised terminology and attendee lists
  • Offer a clear briefing: Outline the key points of discussion, including any potential challenges, or overall aims, so the interpreter can navigate appropriately on the day
  • Minimise interruptions: Aim for uninterrupted communication to maintain the flow of interpreting without needing extra explanations or clarifications – good preparation is the key here
  • Room set-up: Ensure that all participants can see and hear; in particular ensure the interpreter has a seat/or stands next to the speaker/s with a microphone on a stand (if required)
