Our Company Story

More assurance in doing business with China with a Chinese translation expert in your corner

Why China is so important

Twenty-five years ago  - last century - China was unknown and unwanted. Contrast that with 21st century China – everyone wants a piece and China is predicted to become the superpower of this millennium.

China’s economic rise is THE story of the late 20th century. With a GDP fast approaching 5 trillion USD (the second largest in the world*),  growth has averaged almost 10 per cent since the 1980s. China’s accession to the WTO in 2001 has continued to accelerate its progress.

From 1978 when DENG Xiaoping started to introduce market-oriented reforms output quadrupled over the next 20 years. China aims to quadruple it again before 2020.

Importance to Australia

  • China is now Australia’s Number One trading partner, surpassing Japan in May 2007
  • Australia-China 2-way trade is now approaching AUD$80 billion up from $113 million in 1973 when the the two governments signed their first trade agreement.
  • Two-way trade has trebled since 1996.

On 18 April 2005, Prime Minister John Howard and Premier Wen Jiabao agreed that Australia and China would commence negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement.  Australia and China both stand to achieve substantial economic gains – an estimated A$24.4 billion for Australia over a ten year period.

This is the most recent affirmation of the importance of the Australia-China relationship and comes many years after we established our China-focused business – Chin Communications in Australia - specialising in interpreting and translation.

Can you risk a bad translation, or no translation at all?

To be taken seriously communications must be in Chinese. Furthermore, translations must be of a high standard and culturally appropriate.

Statistics on the Chinese translation market always fall short; current estimates put it at close to 3 billion US dollars a year. Research estimates 85% of web pages are in English whereas ony 45% of web users are native English speakers. To work with China, Chinese language capability is paramount.

Our Mission - Effective Communication

In 1992, when Chin Communications was established, we saw the potential importance of China to Australia’s future. Deng Xiaoping soon declared that ‘it didn’t matter what colour the cat was as long as it caught the mouse’, and so began the rush into China.

We made it our mission to find better, smarter ways to get into the China market. Since that time, we have been working with Australian companies, governments and organisations assisting them to enter and succeed in China by providing highly skilled language services. We realised that in doing business with China, all communications have to be in Chinese.

We identified the lack of Chinese language expertise in Australian organisations and the lack of trained translators and interpreters with fluency in English and an understanding of both Australian and Chinese institutions, systems and ways of doing business. We were able to bridge the gap by working with organisations ensuring accurate and timely communications.

We guarantee you’ll never have a bad translation

Our commitment is to assist Australian businesses and governments to get your important messages across and to do so accurately, consistently and on time and to maximise your chances of success in the face of an increasingly competitive world push into China.

While we have kept pace with technology, others have not; the common practice in translation is for a 'central booking agency' to farm the work out to a myriad of translators who may have no relevant experience, often use antiquated equipment, cannot ask questions and have no access to previous translations. This leads to confused and inconsistent messages. We view the translation process as a holistic system: we use the latest technology and a team of highly qualified, experienced translators and we are able to produce the results you want.

We take pride in solving people's problems, foster respect amongst our team, clients and the industry and strive to give our best at all times in all areas of our work. We have a passion for what we do, for professionalism, for continually educating ourselves in order to best assist our clients and, most importantly, we have satisfied clients who can concentrate on the bigger picture knowing that the communication process is taken care of.
