"What a fantastic organisation. You came highly recommended and certainly delivered to high standard. Everyone we dealt with was exceptional and couldn't do enough to help us or make recommendations that will assist us on the business trip. It was outstanding from start to finish and a big thank you. We'll be back next time." Donna Meredith, Keystone Corporate Positioning, February 2009

What is Translation?
Translation is generally regarded as 'translation' or transfer from one language to another of written information. Interpreting being the spoken form.
Written information comes in many forms: letters, legal documents, website text, books, scripts, signs, manuals, even driver licences - any text at all can be translated and in business with China, all communications must be carefully crafted, culturally appropriate and well translated.

Who Translates?
Translation is a highly skilled occupation performed by tertiary qualified, professional translators. Translators are highly skilled in meaning transfer while ensuring the text reads naturally and suits the audience. They use a variety of computer and internet tools and maintain dictionaries and databases of terminology and undertake research as part of their work to ensure the client a professional result.
In Australia, translators are accredited via the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI), this should be the first requirement when seeking a translator to work for you. Membership of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) and other relevant industry associations is preferred and should indicate that the translator is a practising professional, not a part time/hobbyist with consequently limited exposure to current practices, tools and professional development, who may not meet or understand your critical deadlines.
For more about Translating see FAQ.
How is Translation Done?
Most translators will be able to use the Microsoft suite, the more experienced will use a range of other specialized tools too. However publishing programs, such as QuarkXpress, InDesign or Pagemaker require different skills. The fastest and often cheapest way to ensure a perfect result is to let us handle not only the translation but also any typesetting as well. We have worked with clients who had a DIY job that ended up costing more for us to fix up than had we done it from scratch. Printing is costly and professional typesetting by an expert is peace of mind.
A good translation company will liaise with you, the client, to ensure the best possible outcome. We will undertake research and consult our databases; we will then revise and review before finalising the translation. If the work is to be published, we can handle this too and ensure that everything is in the right place and right way up!
For legal requirements, our translators certify the translation (for example court or migration or export documents) or we prepare and swear an affidavit (for example Family Court matters).

How much for Translation?
Translation is normally costed on a fee per word or fee per 100 words basis and will depend on the degree of urgency and difficulty of the text; also on the presentation of the product - e.g. is it to be published or printed. Printing is costly - ensure that you get a professional translation and layout or else it might end up costing a lot more to fix.
If you are obtaining quotations, check the experience and references of the translator; seek recommendations and remember that you get what you pay for - beware of very low-priced quotes, it may cost you more in the long run - even a lost opportunity.
