Chin Communications' Managing Director Charles Qin recently became the first Australian Chinese interpreter to be admitted to the prestigious International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC). This is the highest qualification for interpreters and the organisation has almost 2700 members worldwide. AIIC is the only worldwide association of conference interpreters with members in 88 countries offering 46 languages.
Admission requirements are stringent and include substantial simultaneous conference interpreting experience, relevant qualifications, and a number of sponsors drawn from long-term members who have worked with the applicant. Charles Qin has at the same time achieved NAATI Level 5 status in Australia. This is the highest level of NAATI accreditation and reflects both competence and experience at international standards. Conference Interpreters (Senior) are Advanced Conference Interpreters with a level of excellence in their field, recognized through demonstrated extensive experience and leadership.
Professional interpreters and translators in Australia need to be accredited and ought to belong to the relevant institute and in many cases to specialised language associations as well. Such affiliations usually indicate that the person is a professional practitioner and will adhere to the relevant Code of Ethics.
